it's definitely an art and ode to human creativity. Whenever i make a new board for a project i find so much more than i could've ever imagined, a gift that never stops giving, years of human creativity and love for a craft that more often than not gets mistreated and yet, they've persevered.
The act of gathering reference is such a deeper thing than just a fucking collage.
It's research, learning, assessing and building on your knowledge base.
Even google image search is dog shit for this, crack a fucking book.
Learning names, history, influences.

I find so many artists I've never seen before when researching ref on every single painting I make. This is the way we make connections. Using genAI to make reference is creating unseen missed opportunities at unprecedented speed and removing one more human element of art making.

The thing thats so insidious about using AI this way is that one of the main ways artists get hired are studios looking for art references and they find us and reach out.
This is removing a major avenue to get work if they can just generate nameless derivations of our ideas.
