🐘 Just dropped my latest blog post.
Spoiler: this elephant isn't here to stomp on our climate goals but to help carry them forward. Let's give this gentle giant the credit it deserves!

Why We're Not Afraid of the Nuclear Elephant (And Neither Should You Be)
Last week, an article circulated in ECO—the daily newsletter published by the Climate Action Network (CAN) at COP29—warning of a "nuclear stampede" threatening climate finance.

Past midnight here in Baku. Second part of the plenary starting & final changes to the NCQG being done in a huddle in some corner of the room, between only few countries.
One thing is sure: this COP29 lacks transparency and participation.

Closing plenary of #COP29 has started. Negotiations have not finished yet. But the #COP30 launching video was shown. Number of gaveling at this COP as of now: 0.

A new text on the NCQG is circulating. First discussion open to observers in quite a long time.

A #COP so unaccessible and non transparent hasn’t been seen in a while. Art6 & NCQG is just inf infs & huddles and expressions of dissatisfaction during infs.

At #COP29: I wish the delegates had a button on the desk they can press that just says “we are not entirely happy but this will do.” A lot of time could be saved in the negotiations!

#COP29 NEW TEXT

Anyone who told you that Article 6 carbon trading had been "finalised on day 1" was, sadly, very wide of the mark

We now have a trio of new drafts to prove it, clocking in at 51pp, with disagreement around 499 bracketed passages and 130 "options" (!)

📢Global Carbon Budget 2024📢

Despite some predicting a peak in global fossil CO2 emissions, we estimate growth of 0.8% [-0.3% to 1.9%] in 2024. Maybe a peak next year?

Is it all bad news, or can we find some good news?

Today at COP29, the US announced a roadmap to deploy 15 GW of nuclear by 2035, & 15 GW per year after that by 2040, for a total of 200GW by 2050. I kicked this off and led it from OSTP while there and I’m very glad to see the final product from whole team. Let’s go www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/u...

U.S. leadership advancing nuclear energy at home and abroad can and should continue. At COP29, the US is announcing national targets to triple nuclear by 2050, and jumpstart that with 35GW by 2035. Plus we're releasing a framework of actions for how to get there.
