Republicans who voted to eliminate all federal support for NPR, PBS & their member stations may or may not know how much their own constituents stand to lose. Former NPR President & CEO @vivianschiller.bsky.social joins me at 10a ET on why they should be aware of the magnitude of their vote. #Velshi

I talked about the publc radio cuts on MSNBC this morning. Now that the deed is done, it's time to turn the page and reimagine a governance system without federal funding and the bureaucractic Corporation for Public Braodcasting. We can come out of this stronger, and we will.
“These cuts to public media are going to be hardest hit in rural communities and disproportionately in red states where news deserts are vast” @vivianschiller.bsky.social on the “devastating” impact of cutting federal funds to areas that rely heavily on public broadcasting.

Indeed! A Joan or two would be a lifeline to NPR/public radio and allow the system to develop a new, more resilience govenrance system - without a Corporaton for Public Broadcasting in the way. Always listen to Bill.
In 2003, Joan Kroc (widow to the McDonald’s executive) bequeathed to NPR around $230 million. It transformed the network.

Which of our many billionaires would like to be remembered the way Joan Kroc is today?

Step right up! Don’t be shy!

‘Are you sitting down?’ The windfall that transformed NPR 20 years ago.
In 2003, McDonald’s heiress Joan B. Kroc bequeathed more than $200 million to NPR. This is the impact of the record-breaking gift over the past 20 years.

So much going on in this text, which was written — we could also say "lived" — by NPR's media reporter. The most important in my view are these words from a former CEO of NPR, Vivian Schiller.

"Any evidence-based news organization that reports critically is going to be accused of left-wing bias."
July 18, 2025 at 4:20 PM
NPR is one of the world’s great news organizations. Accusations of bias are unwarranted and the cuts will harm smaller stations in red and blue states alike. THAT SAID I've long believed journalism + gov't funding is a toxic brew. Let's build a new and healthy model for public radio.

This is astounding — with huge implications for the years ahead:
Solar + storage is now $104 per MWh in Las Vegas or similar regions for nearly 100% clean firm power. There is no way new nuclear can compete with this. Even new gas plants will struggle and that is assuming access to cheap gas over the life-cycle of the plant, which is kind of a crazy gamble TBH.
Batteries are so cheap now, solar power doesn’t sleep
Batteries are now cheap enough to make 24/7 solar power affordable, unlocking round-the-clock clean energy in the world’s sunniest cities.

This is devestating news. John was a force of nature, a true believer, and a helluva good time. I can't believe he's gone and wish we could have found a way to keep him with us.
My heart is broken. We have lost John Thornton, cofounder of Texas Tribune and the American Journalism Project, who brought generosity, energy, wisdom, humor, and openness to his crusade to save journalism and with it democracy.
