8-mo-old cat with a history of severe illness after consuming raw milk sold commercially. cat euthanised. Lesions and virus found (via IHC) across many organs. This milk was eventually recalled.

US retail milk monitoring April-May 2024 - 36% prods positive, 5 states where no outbreak reported. Dec 2024–Jan 2025 only 6.9% prods positive, all of whiich were from california (site of ongoing outbreak). Positive trend.

Cross species transmission of HPAI into mammals comes with emergence of key mutations. Turns out, for influenza A, there is reduction in GC content following emergence in mammals. May facilitate virus entry, replication, transmissibility.

According to below report, avian influenza H5N1 diagnosed in association with mortality of nearly 10,000 crows (species?) in Darbhanga, Bihar, north-east India since January 2026.
H5N1 avian influenza confirmed in Darbhanga, Bihar, after thousands of crows found dead in Ward 31 area.

Lab tests from Bhopal verified the outbreak as authorities deploy veterinary teams across the district to inspect poultry farms and prevent spread.

HPAI is having a huge impact on scavengers. Here, 84.3% of dead black vultures in the US HPAI positive. Pathology confirms that digestive tract is the initial site of viral entry during ingestion of high viral doses with strong epitheliotropism.

H5N1 virus isolated from bovine milk (H5N1Tex/24) replicates as efficiently as the H1N1 pdm09 in well-differentiated human nasal epithelial cells. H5N1Tex/24 replicates effectively at 33C vs earlier avian H5N1 which require 37C - adaptation to human URT.

Ghana, 2020-21: 2847 samples from birds, swine, poultry. 2.2% +ve for H5N1, positives only in poultry. Virueses similar to those circulating elsewhere in AFrica.

Passerines don't appear to play a large role in maintaining LPAI viruses. Here, a LPAI H1N1 in a fieldfare in Ukraine. Similar to other H1N1 viruses reported in Eurasia.

Ferrets infected with HPAI: Baloxivir but not oseltamivir administered pre or post illness reduced virus impacts. Combination OST/BXA treatment resulted in significant improvements.
