Recently finished reading Roadside Picnic and can’t recommend it enough. The ending is one of my favorites of any story. It also greatly elevates the STALKER series. I’m going through S2 and can’t imagine playing without the perspective that comes with reading what inspired the series.

Somehow, in the final 3 days of 2025, Vintage Story came from behind and became my game of the year. BF6 put up a good fight, but couldn’t beat the sense of discovery and mechanical satisfaction that VS has.

I think these awards felt especially boring because categories like Best RPG and Best Indie each honor overall quality among a subset rather than a specific craft. If a game is the best of the year, and it’s an RPG, obviously it is also the best RPG. Needs an overhaul to avoid pointless repetition
