Highlighting the speaker who stood in front of the Surprise mayor and told him to consider what the Mayor of Ohrdruf must’ve thought before he died by suicide: “He might have thought ‘how is this my fault I had no jurisdiction over this’ maybe he said ‘this site was not subject to local zoning.’”

The Cowl of Sauron is finished! For his first official outing, the Great Eye brought Dog on a walk.

I'm enjoying the gay hockey show but cannot stop laughing at how the third episode is literally a coffeeshop AU brought to life on television.

The fifteen second fight was the best part of the episode.

I do not think the guy who calls himself Sauron the Great, Lord of the Rings, King of the Earth has particularly low self-esteem.

When I'm brimming with feelings I can't find the right words for, sometimes all I can manage is a picture. Love and strength to Minnesota in this heartbreaking time.

Alex from our time working together, while he was in nursing school. Later, he moved to ICU, working as a nurse to support critically ill Veterans. He had such a great attitude. We’d chat between patients about trying to get in a mountain bike ride together. Will never happen now

The Devonian Period Dunkleosteus didn’t have teeth but instead exposed jaws that self sharpened like two knives every time they opened and closed their mouth.

Re lrb, idk about violently exploding trees, but i have heard them crack due to the cold. probably something to do with sap expanding as it rapidly freezes, would be my guess.

“The Ents are going to war”
I've lived in Minnesota my whole life and have experienced some major cold snaps but this is the first time I've heard about exploding trees.

I read something that I’d been avoiding for Reasons and wow, I’m kinda glad I did because it’s not good and I get to feel superior.

I love the snow, but I always miss CA this time of year. Christmas isn't the same without lights on palm trees.

1. The Gnomish Lexicon has a word for lawyer. Gnomish would become Sindarin; there is no equivalent Qenya or Quenya word.

2. "War crime" is a meaningless concept applied to actions in the First Age, since war crimes are a construct of international law that Elves don't have.

Someday I'll come up with an OC for Elf Chomsky. In the meantime, have some Optimality Theory in Aman:

The other thing with this is that the versions of Quenya and Sindarin that we have are both as they are spoken in Third Age Western Middle-earth. I would never write the dialect of Sindarin the First Age Noldor used, because we *do not know* nearly enough about it to even guess at what's correct.
Idk, Darth Fingon, when an author would ask if they should use Quenya or Sindarin, would answer "English." I feel more or less that way about the use of thee/thou in fic.
November 15, 2025 at 4:29 PM
I am a hypocrite here because I have literally written characters having a conversation in my conlang of Tolkien's conlangs and expected the reader to more or less understand it.
(My own answer to the "Sindarin or Quenya" question is also "English" but it comes with the footnote of "consider Elven sociolinguistics and semantics!")

One reason why bsky is nice for random Silm thoughts is that I can post things publicly here that I do want to talk/lecture about but where, if I posted them on tumblr, there'd be the strong possibility of hurting people's feelings. I like talking about writing choices! I don't like hurting feelings
November 15, 2025 at 4:22 PM
I wish I didn't have such a strong negative reaction to how the Silm fandom uses thee/thou. Another fic I was enjoying, but the frequent use of it takes me out every time. It's something that *breaks* immersion for me.
