1832 Committee on Tithes: "The late Bishop of Cork said to me, 'We are in the habit of blaming the Roman-catholics for the resistance to tithes, but I believe, if the real truth was known, there is scarcely any country gentlemen in Ireland who is not in his heart a whiteboy.'"

The second best Northern Star behind the original
The first issue of the Chartist newspaper, the Northern Star, appeared #OnThisDay 18 November 1837. Without it, Chartism would have been a far weaker thing.

Never seen this before. A fervent counter-revolutionary
Archbishop Troy is an absolutely fascinating person, and was the head of the archdiocese where most of the worst of the violence of 1798 took place (in Wexford and Wicklow). He had a pastoral read across the city urging people not to become part of secret societies and to keep the peace

Historians have generally argued that the United Irishmen 'took over' the Defenders. I reckon it's much more the other way round: the plebeian and peasant Defenders 'took over' the United Irish. We even have Thomas Addis Emmet trying to tell us this, by almost direct address.
