In August 2025, I recorded 104 fatal landslides, a record total number of landslides for August. 2025 is shaping up to be a terrible year for fatal landslides, with the cumulative total to that point being close to the highest year, in 2024.

We will keep underestimating the scale and complexity of cascading #geohazards in high mountains without a fundamental shift in perspective, policies, and their implementation.☝️Developing scenarios to facilitate impact based forecasting schemes is a way forward

Survivors of the 1 September 2025 earthquake in Afghanistan have correctly assessed that rainfall-triggered landslides are much more likely in the aftermath of the mainshock. This illustrates how landslides extend the impact of an earthquake in time and space.

Afghan earthquake survivors refuse to return to villages, fearing landslides
Haunted by the fear that aftershocks could bring rocks crashing down from the mountains, the survivors of Afghan earthquakes vowed not to return to destroyed villages but camp in fields and on riverbanks instead, even without tents to keep off the rain.

I share the sentiment of Sara about her publishing achievement. For me as well, it is essential to publish work that has the potential to positively impact society.

🌍 #Landslides threaten rapidly growing mountainous cities. Studying them carefully is crucial to guide equitable and informed actions.

These are fascinating debris flows that've been occurring for years. They mobilize from pyrite-rich fractured quartz latite that acidifies groundwater and chemically weakens the rock in place (I measured pH 4.7 years ago). Then, a big storm + gravity = this. ⚒️ 🧵
