A feast of Classics events in Cambridge in May!

Fun fact. In the movie The Return, Odysseus is wrecked and washed ashore on Ithaca. That blurs his arrival on Ithaca into his arrival on Scheria. Now, the Ithacan shore scene in the movie is shot on Rovinia Beach, Corfu — which Corfiot lore identifies as his 'real' landing point on Scheria.

Love the spredges!

Hello David!

Wow!

Yes, definitely! I've still got my Twitter account but have barely used it for years

HI Greg!

Yes, thanks: I meant immigrants, and that they were de facto likely to be subelite

I guess even if the wrong sort were thought by some to be ‘overbreeding’ (like you I can’t think of examples of that kind of discourse for antiquity) that was balanced out by high infant/child mortality rates esp among the non-elite

Yes, I love 'Silius'! It's very Asterix

And yes it is lots of different names stuck together (and yes it is one single person).

... Rutilianus Rufinus Silius Valens Valerius Niger Claudius Fuscus Saxa Amyntianus Sosius Priscus.

I'm pleased to be writing about the bearer of my favourite Roman name: Quintus Pompeius Senecio Roscius Murena Coelius Sextus Julius Frontinus Silius Decianus Gaius Julius Eurycles Herculaneus Lucius Vibullius Pius Augustanus Alpinus Bellicius Sollers Julius Aper Ducenius Proculus ...

He only drinks water, but he has to sample everything. As my son said when we moved house over the summer, 'imagine how long it would have taken without Jacques to help: we'd have had to have sniffed everything ourselves.'

He’s 90% fluff

This is my first post on BlueSky. Am I doing it right?

Fancy a Friday-night treat? Douglas Cairns' brand new article on emotions in classical literature — a tour de force — is now free on the Oxford Classical Dictionary website. We're planning to follow up with a linked series on individual emotions.
