Do you think executives at paper towel companies have meetings where they talk to each other about being market leaders in absorbance-based excellence

Demand accountability from future influencers! In age-appropriate crayon!

The One Ring would be safe with me. Like, I’d still totally get corrupted, but I’d procrastinate actually using it for anything.

Me (being offered a poison apple by a witch and knowing that it's poisoned but not wanting to be impolite): "Oh cool, thanks. I love these."

Heartbreaking: Local author uses “slay yourself and rise again” as arc words, cannot use them as marketing copy on the off chance people try to take it literally

Thinking about tradition as a lens. Beyond institutionalized traditions (e.g. civics, religion) there are quieter traditions like genre that contain a history of people approaching situations with a particular set of tools they inherited from the people before them. And you can read texts this way.

pessimist: the cup is half empty
rhetorician: the cup's fullness is constituted by the audience's reaction to it, which is often a matter of pathos as much as logos

written by a guy who deeked into an abbey during a snowstorm when he was 21 and became the abbot within a year and bullshat so much historians were confused for centuries

Joined a couple author starter packs and now my feed is entirely composed of people promoting their books. Thinking if I repost all of those posts then I can make the problem twice as bad for everyone else in the pack. Most important part of networking is the psychological warfare.

i know a lot of people are like "live for spite!!!" and i 100% support that if that's what keeps you going but if it doesn't work for you you can live for a variety of reasons, including "read book that isn't out yet", "love", "step on a crunchy leaf", "look at the river", "pat a creature" etc

This thread is very worth the read.
Lots of despairing talk these days about Dem failures in rural areas. I have an idea for how to start putting a dent in that problem.

And since BlueSky just rolled out a threading feature today, here goes, with an idea that came to me from going very, very deep and long into rural America: 1/x

Rationalist on twitter asks a bunch of other rationalists if they have arguments for why truth is a terminal rather than instrumental value. Shortly afterward follows up with a post asking for no more emotional sermons. Those who have eyes, let them see.

NaNoWriMo is what got me to start taking writing seriously. The book I'm publishing in Februrary started as a NaNoWriMo project.

I hope the next generation of authors can find some other accountability structure—perhaps the lovely Council of the Eternal Hiatus discord server: discord.gg/Ju7wpsb9
