I think the most disappointing part of the current state of things is how vastly different things are to 15-ish years ago. So much change, but how much is really for the better? Now we snitch on our neighbors and friends. Now we suspect our opponents of treason. It’s heartbreaking to think about.

Music Teacher Moment: Kodàly (pronounced CODE-eye) is dying in the USA because so many are refusing to let go of the music we have used for generations. It’s racist. It’s hurtful. It’s harmful. Kodàly’s own philosophy was that music is for everyone - which means NOT using music that harms.

Star Trek Disco’s Saru is my favorite and represents so much of what it’s like going around afraid of EVERYTHING. He is the bravest on the show, and idc if he’s a coward to everyone else b/c he wants to flee. He got there in the first place even though he was scared the whole time. #StarTrekDiscoS1

It’s been three days of #poetry by Sappho and by Amanda Lovelace. Even fragmented, the story of Sappho’s love, loss, and growth is just rich. Lovelace creates such an empowering line of dialogue in her Break Your Glass Slippers, and many of those little verses pack a wallop. I’m refreshed, changed.

My mother and my partner both love #StarTrek. Me, too, but them more so. I knew, however, that holidays would always be interesting because my partner’s favorite captain is Janeway, and least favorite is Kirk. Mom’s favorite and least favorite are the opposite. (I prefer Space Jesus, myself.)

I’ve picked up my large tapestry project again and finally found the patience to undo the ~17 rows to fix the tension. I’m continuing on while remembering how excited I was to create a large work of art dedicated to #EpicTheMusical. Here’s hoping I can finish the first song in the next couple weeks!

Charles Strouse, Tony award-winning composer of Annie, dies aged 96
Over the course of an illustrious career, Strouse composed music for Broadway shows such as Bye Bye Birdie and Applause but was best known for Annie’s evergreen songs
The composer Charles Strouse, a three-time Tony award-winner whose hits included Annie, has died at the age of 96. His death at home in New York on Thursday was announced by his four children.
Over the course of a long and illustrious career, Strouse composed music for the Broadway shows Bye Bye Birdie, Golden Boy, Applause, Rags and Nick & Nora. But he was perhaps best known for his score for Annie which opened in New York in 1977 and ran for almost six years. The story of the plucky red-headed orphan featured evergreen songs (with lyrics by Martin Charnin) including Tomorrow, You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile and It’s the Hard-Knock Life, which was sampled by Jay-Z in a 1998 single. Annie received seven Tony awards, including best musical and best original score, and won the Grammy for best cast show album. It was adapted as a film in 1982. Continue reading...
