How does employment change differ across German regions & is it all about the urban-rural divide? 🏙️ 🏡

Happy to see the first paper of my PhD now out in Kölner Zeitschrift für Soziologie and Sozialpsychologie!

Read the paper #OpenAccess here doi.org/10.1007/s115... and 🧵👇:
Beyond Thriving Cities and Declining Rural Areas: Mapping Geographic Divides in Germany’s Employment Structure, 1993–2019 - KZfSS Kölner Zeitschrift für Soziologie und Sozialpsychologie
This article assesses the popular thesis of growing regional inequality and urban–rural divides for Germany, focusing on the quality of employment opportunities. Drawing on a 2% sample of individuals ...

An analysis by Golem.de, I would support. Further, in my opinion, everything seems volatile, even crude predictions are difficult.

In Germany, a discussion about lazy workers argues that workers are statistically more sick than in other countries. But Germany has one of the longest paid sick leave policies, so these long duration cases raise the average. Cases with 6 weeks+ make up the most paid days.

According to this article, science is political by simply "following a systematic methodology based on evidence".

Many people are sharing this graph, which seemingly shows reasons for why swing voters decided against Harris. Here's a 🧵 on why this tells us very little about actual motivations for vote choice.
Method: Swing voters were presented with 4 choice pairs with the statements below.

If you hate protesters blocking roads in the name of taking immediate #climateaction, you’re going to really hate how Climate Change itself blocks roads.

I wanted to dig into the concepts of Work-as-Done and Work-as-Imagined, so I went over some recent documents around safety and resilience engineering, and then more historical sources from French ergonomics, and put together a sort of overview of the roots of the concept:

Hochschild’s concept of a “deep story” can be helpful here. Veracity isn’t as important as whether something “feels true” — if it aligns with values, hopes, fears, etc. Deep stories persist across time, connecting events. Corrections of single claims are unlikely to change belief in the story.
Commentary: Many voters are willing to accept misinformation from political leaders – even when they know it’s factually inaccurate. Yet they still respond positively, if they believe these inaccurate statements evoke a deeper, more important “truth.”
