🚁 At the Lit & Phil last week, CPOM's @andyshepherd.bsky.social & @treacherousbuzz.bsky.social showed how drones are transforming fieldwork in polar regions, sharing these highlights from a CPOM PhD research trip to Iceland last year ❄️

I've been working on it for over a decade but the scale of the ice in Antarctica still 🤯
Look for the scale bar in the bottom right, 4km
Ice Calving, Thwaites Glacier, Antarctica
Late winter hi-res image of the glacier that flows into the Amundsen Sea, producing this spectacular calving event (ice floes). If Thwaites were to collapse from climate change, it could raise global sea levels by 65 centimetres.

Our paper is out, providing alternative viewpoints to some polar geoengineering ideas covered in the media recently. Lots still to talk about but let's focus on decarbonising instead of drilling Antarctica for now? 🇦🇶
Thanks @newscientist.com @mjflepage.bsky.social for covering this important issue!

2 weeks internet free in camp. Nothing bad happened in the UK or the world in general while we were away... right? 😬

I've got test tubes am I a real scientist now? 👩🏼‍🔬

It's a double pole summer, can I even call myself a modeller any more?

The SLIDE team all safely arrived in Kangerlussuaq and ready to science (after sleep)!

Back at @bas.ac.uk and the scale model of the Sir David Attenborough is so much more fun when you can spot your own cabin. Wishing I was back south and not in the Cambridge heat though! 🥵

Two days, two school visits, two excellent sets of students, thanks yr 8 @hebburncomp.bsky.social & yr 12 @ St Mary's! Hopefully a few future glaciologists inspired by my adventures on Boaty McBoatface (picture taken by one of the SDA crew in Lemaire Channel 🇦🇶, I'm on the tiny boat by the big berg!)

"Antarctic research is central to global climate strategies. Although geoengineering solutions have been proposed, their high costs and environmental risks make them less viable compared to more effective strategies like reducing global carbon emissions."

We came looking for chlorophyll and our acoustician found this... At 180m tall I guess we found out where the monster hangs out when not in Loch Ness @biopole.bsky.social?

The science team currently on the RRS Sir David Attenborough 🚢
We've been finding out more about what's going on in the polar ocean and atmosphere as the southern hemisphere heads into winter ❄️

Some of the @biopole.bsky.social team and our science buddies enjoyed a walk around Rothera this morning, it's definitely getting wintery here! Necessary exercise to burn off all the incredible food on the RRS Sir David Attenborough. Fish and chips Friday tonight 😋

Good morning from Boaty McBoatface 🚢

In 2016 @tjy511.bsky.social and I were lucky enough to be invited to the keel laying for the RRS Sir David Attenborough through @ukpolarnetwork.bsky.social. Neither of us ever expected to go on the ship but there was a free breakfast and we almost got a selfie with the man himself 🚢

Parents have been clearing out my old school books and turns out I've actually been concerned about Antarctica for quite some time. Promise not to make a fire once I get there 😬

It’s been a wonderful final day of #EGU25 with a talk and poster from CPOM’s @treacherousbuzz.bsky.social (@northumbriauni.bsky.social) and posters from Adam Bateson and David Schroeder (@uniofreading.bsky.social).

Here are some photos of the team in action!

Wishing everyone a safe journey home.

6 years of the session admin, 2 convening virtually and now finally 1 in person. This had better be one hell of a party...

Strong start to the last day of EGU25, it's finally ice sheet hydrology time!!❄️💧

Kicking us off it's our invited speaker Tim Hill with his statistical approach to subglacial modelling.

Excited to announce that the SLIDE team have won EGU25. Commiserations to all others participating.

It's nice to be shown "nice landforms" by Chris in the safety of an EGU lecture than from the car in Greenland while he was definitely much more excited about the landforms than the direction the road was going in 😂
