THIS is why I teach it's important not to break up adjectives from their nouns in headlines: I scanned just the first line and started to freak out.

Oxford’s Word of the Year Is ‘Brain Rot’
A slang term for supposed mental damage done by overconsumption of trivial online content triumphed over a shortlist that also included “lore,” “demure” and “slop.”

Oh, good grief! All this talk about restrooms on federal land. At the Presidio National Park in San Francisco, we simply have restrooms — totally private (and clean!) toilet stalls used by everyone. There’s a common area in the middle for handwashing. Maybe that’s what’s needed in Congress.

Educating their peers as an admirable goal of students enrolled in scholastic journalism programs. Here’s an opportunity for teachers to help reporters do a deep dive into the criminal justice system and how it affects their community.

Hey, @kgrubaugh.bsky.social Look what's making the rounds — again.
Makes me sad re-reading this amazing letter from ex-Watergate Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox sent to high school seniors in 1994 after they asked him “What should Americans learn from Watergate?” 20 years later in ‘94.

His answer is remarkable—unfortunately things didn’t work out so well in 2024.

As I taught my journalism students at University of New Hampshire, the requirement is objectivity, not neutrality.

Moreover, every journalist should understand that reportage is just one of three dozen genres of journalism. Know your subgenre.

Third, never use a source you know to be a liar.
