Project: Varved sediments have been established as one of the most prominent environmental archives. Lake Synevyr is the first site in the Eastern Carpathians where varved sediments were discovered, providing the basis for completely new reconstructions of the Holocene environmental changes in this region. With our project we address the following research questions: What was the dynamics of climate change / human impact in the region during the transition from a nature-dominated to a human-dominated environment? Is the most recent time unusual within the Holocene? We aim to (1) reconstruct local vegetation changes, soil erosion and lake productivity since lake initiation to the present, and (2) evaluate the interactions between climate variability / human activity, and their impact on the lake environment. Contact: The project is led by Prof. Wojciech Tylmann form Paleoenvironmental Research Laboratory, Department of Geomorphology and Quaternary Geology. Candidates are requested to send (in one PDF file!) their CV including scientific achievements, motivation letter, references from the supervisor of their MSc thesis or immediate superior, and consent to the processing of personal data to the following email address: wojciech.tylmann@ug.edu.pl. The final deadline for submissions is July 25th at 3:00 pm, and the competition results will be announced by July 31th, 2025. Recently, we described a "new" species of amoeba. It's just been found it again, 700 km away. I suspect it's common in eastern N.A., but not noticed until it had a name. One reason to do taxonomy: describing a thing makes it visible! www.inaturalist.org/observations... #taxonomy #systematics

First field trip this year, checking and maintaining equipment and reading data. Unfortunately, we start this year with worse moisture conditions than last year. If last year at the end of the summer on some sites the ground water dropped to -80 cm, I don't know how it will be this year...

A perfect little thing, crafted by a cunning amoeboid. This shell was collected in a calcareous fen near Winnipeg, Canada. It's the handiwork (pseudopodiwork?) of the cercozoan amoeba Scutiglypha scutigera (=Euglypha scutigera). #ProtistsOnSky #TestateAmoebae #peatland

Usually, I don't pay much attention to diatoms and chrysophytes, but when an amoeba glues a bunch of them together to make its shell, suddenly I can't stop staring. Here are two shells of Difflugia globulosa, collected in Chisasibi, on the coast of James Bay. #ProtistsOnSky
