Where are the Brits getting this view of immigration?
Ben, considering all the breathless airtime & column-inches devoted to this, how is it that polls *still* show “the public has a very distorted perception” of immigration?

Ben Chu @benchu.bsky.social goes onto feed and clarify the “narrative” on hotels (@helenbamber.bsky.social), phones and iPads.

The folks at More In Common found 2/3 of Brits are WRONG about immigration…

But are we really? Or do we just mean 2 different things when we talk about immigration?

It costs:
💰 £144.98 a night to house someone seeking sanctuary in a run-down repurposed hotel
💰 £132 a night to ship them to an isolated, traumatising military camp
OR
💰 £23.25 a night to let them live in an ordinary, safe, community home

A lot to digest from today’s meeting with Westminster Council but the key takeaway is that they were supposed to clear the encampment on 1 January but instead turned up at midnight one day last week and evicted everyone 7 hours later with no warning it was coming. Community is now fractured.
Printing some photographs to take with me to the meeting with Westminster Council next week to discuss the Adelphi tent encampment. It’s easy to make decisions about people when you don’t know who they are & don’t see them as individuals. Not so easy when faced with the reality & the consequences.

The immigration hostile environment encourages overzealous over enforcement because there is no penalty in that direction. But there are severe penalties for under enforcement.
Universities have an extreme fear of the Home Office and have created a nightmarish administrative apparatus to implement the government’s hostile environment.

The outcome is that overseas students futures can be crushed for the most trivial of administrative errors.
