A lack of investment in public transport for 50 years has brought us to this point.
Not to mention the planning system.

Cian, I am a regular visitor to Prague, with a population similar to Dublin's. There is an excellent bus service to the city, where you can get a metro or tram. Car use to the airport is very low, and public transport is never stretched. Im pro Metro North and it should have been built 30y ago

Planning laws need reform, I think we can agree on that.

Take a bus.
February 8, 2026 at 8:34 PM
That is a totally different argument, and yes, many sectors need that level of air travel based on an island.
February 8, 2026 at 8:22 PM
I hear you I sold my car in 2019 and use public transport and Gocar ever since. However, I cannot do without a regular air service to Europe. Yes, emissions must be reduced for air travel, but Ireland has almost zero investment in public transport. Neighbours have 4 cars, one for each. It's mad.
February 8, 2026 at 8:20 PM
It's an island economy the airport is a vital link. Working in the film sector, it would not be viable without those international connections, and that's only one industry. In terms of transport, car congestion is a bigger issue. Ireland needs to quadruple its bus and rail investment. then farming

That's a very limited argument, living on an island, but I do understand your view.
February 8, 2026 at 8:08 PM
Imagine spending โ‚ฌ300m adding a new lane to the M50 and then capping it at 5,000 cars a day โ€” the same logic applies here. Iโ€™m not dismissing green goals, but as an island nation our main airport is essential infrastructure.
February 8, 2026 at 7:34 PM
Investing over โ‚ฌ300m in a new runway only to impose a cap makes little sense. From Limerick, I regularly take the 2.5โ€‘hour express bus to Dublin Airport, it is reliable public transport works. For perspective, Prague 1.5M operates effectively without any tram or rail link to its airport - good buses
