I know it’s a drop in the ocean but the climate impact of travel for academic research & conferences needs far greater attention. The Eurostar & Bahn might be slower & pricier but *generally* get you there (German archives if that’s your thing) in the end! #flightfreeresearch

Well worth a read for the scale of AI problems facing us all. I’d like to think universities are capable of adapting, because knowledge, research and critical thinking are more important than ever. But unis need to get on top of this now, rethink assessment etc…

In a turbulent period of UK political history the treatment of universities has been arguably the defining symbol. Important to so many challenges - growth, local economies, international competitiveness, trade - yet generally treated as an irritation if not ignored completely.
What we're doing in the uni sector is shutting off routes for kids with Bs and Cs to do key (and prestigious) subjects, and closing down the ability of young people to go to the local uni just when it becomes ruinous expensive to go way. Will have incalculable consequences for social mobility.

The @royalhistsoc.org writing workshop is a fantastic scheme - it really helped with the final stages of writing, plus it was a nice way to bring people together for discussions and of course food. Anyway, it worked as the book has since appeared! yalebooks.co.uk/book/9780300...

My father, an immigrant, came to this country with no academic qualifications, no money, and barely
a word of English. People from his country were very unpopular in GB back then. He settled, built a business that employed many people over the years. Standing room only at his funeral. Bye, Labour.
