Driving home through Cwmystwyth valley yesterday in mid Wales, below the EBA mine on Copa Hill (out of picture, above right) it never fails to impress how a few true geniuses 4500 years ago managed to spot ores in these bleak hills

First snow on the mountains this winter: view up the Dysynni Valley to Craig Aderyn / Bird Rock and Cadair Idris.
Bright red berries on an otherwise bare silver-branched hawthorn overlook a field of long scrubby yellow dead grasses bordered by muddy-green-leaved willows and alders. Beyond, the dark hump of the distinctive outcrop of Craig Aderyn looms up and, beyond this, the snow-covered slopes of Cadair Idris disappear into white snow clouds.
