Jim Aparo. His late 1970's issues of "The Brave & the Bold" featured a definitive version of the character. He'd return to the character in the late 1980's & through the 1990s, but it didn't have the same impact on me as his early work. Very rare image but 1 from Miller's prime, featuring 2 characters he's been closely associated with. One he created for Marvel. David Mazzucchelli's iconic cover to promote "Batman: Year One", later reproduced in collected editions of the story (originally appearing in "Batman" v1, #s 404-407 in 1987). Matt Wagner's cover. Doesn't have the same impact as other images from the 2-issue story itself. Wagner's depiction of Batman is in my top 5 faves, based on this series, and his "Faces" arc in "LotDK"..

A lot more effective making it an obsession, & seem plausible by starting with an exaggerated childhood event, rather than a 20-something rich guy sitting in his posh parlor wearing a smoking jacket, musing for inspiration when a random bat appears. The references to Jason Todd, who's already current Robin for a few years when this DKR story was released, was compelling & ominous. Maybe a year later in DC's "Legends" crossover miniseries, Jason gets attacked by an angry mob whipped up against costumed vigilantes, & it immediately conjures up these references in "DKR". Great set-up. Tells us a lot with a few points of view. And this scene was then echoed by Christopher Nolan very clearly in his 2012 "The Dark Knight Rises". Seeing it in the theater back then was like, "about time". When the Batman movie was announced in 1988, I really wanted it to be an adaptation of Miller & Mazzucchelli's "Batman: Year One". I was a little let down by the movie in 1989. Consummate Batman. The cops are there, but almost inconsequential to him. Spoken to only when necessary. He's driven too hard, but still walks that razor's edge.

Dawn of a new age of comics. I was 14. Blown away & completely captivated. Batman had long been my fave character since I'd been 4 or 5. This all-star creative team was at it's peak. This story changed the comics industry. Tone, mood, atmosphere. A reflection of larger & intimate struggles. So much is said with minimal dialog. Succinct in capturing tense, searingly personal character moments & memories. Miller took what was already in the character for 47 years & went farther with it. Expanding on the trauma a young kid losing his parents to a violent murder. Alfred's sharp wit, and simultaneous indulgence & resentment of the warped troubled obsessions of the boy he raised into a man. A highlight throughout the story.
