Determined to fight MAGA/fascism in every way I can, in hopes that I live to see the US become a place where EVERYONE has rights, respect, and opportunity. I find solace in books, creativity, computer games, historical research, and small things of beauty.

For anyone curious about my Bluesky name: As I'd originally intended to use Bsky mainly for my genealogy/history research, I chose a name that was an homage to the title of a poem written by one of my great-great-grandfathers, Harlan Ashley Pierce. Unfortunately, then politics took over the world.
Just a note to say that I'm going to try to step back from posting (or reading news) for a day or two for the sake of my mental health and remnants of sanity.

Trump was on the ropes‼️He’s not invincible ‼️

I am so freaking tired of stupidity. Between Trump thinking he can lower drug prices by 1200% and Oz not having the two brain cells it would take to grasp that saying that Americans must lose 400 pounds apiece is absurd. . . I just can't. Will someone please wake me up from this nightmare?
Dr. Oz wants each American to lose 400 pounds for the midterm swimsuit competition

In response to this claim that the "strategy didn't work."

The people were on our side. We were building momentum to help save our democracy. We could have won - the premium increase notices were just starting.

And giving in now will embolden him. Things will likely get worse.

Pretty much the only thing keeping me off the ledge at this point is that, as an older person in ill health, offing myself (or dying because of too-expensive medical care) is exactly what Trump and his billionaire buddies want people like me to do. Spite sucks as a reason to stay alive but it'll do.

Centrist Democrats in the Senate folded on the shutdown, throwing away their leverage in exchange for worthless GOP promises.

When will they learn that there is no center between a government of oligarchs and a government of the people? https://youtu.be/EQzG_TrhyrY?si=LBXGJad9NjGyBGBo

Tonight’s Senate vote on the federal government shutdown should have been a time for strength.

Instead we saw capitulation and a betrayal of working Americans.

The American people need more from their leaders.

The average SNAP benefit per month is $177 a person.

The average ACA benefit per month is up to $550 a person.

People want us to hold the line for a reason. This is not a matter of appealing to a base. It’s about people’s lives.

And working people want leaders whose word means something to them.

"Democrats could have held the line on the shutdown, and spent weeks watching Trump’s approval ratings fall," writes Jonathan Chait. Instead, he argues, they're making a mistake by giving in:

Dem base that gave them a blue tsunami: DON'T CAVE

Majority of Dem elected officials: DON'T CAVE

The majority of Americans blame the GOP for the shutdown and higher costs...

8 Dem Centrists (and you better believe Schumer knows what's up): Nah, We'll cave.

I guarantee you calls came from donors.

Trump is actually trying to make a royal edict, a ukase, to establish as truth something that is not true.
That 2O20 happened differently.
He is trying to legally warp and bend reality.
To turn his Reality Show tv presidency into reality itself.
Alternative reality into the official reality.

Millions of Americans went without a paycheque.

Millions more went without SNAP & endured the trauma of not knowing where their next meal would come from.

They suffered because healthcare is worth fighting for.

They rewarded the Dems with a blue wave and Schumer just ensured it was for nothing
