MY best books of the year. These books have stayed with me and gave me the best reading experiences. They reminded me why I read. Some I wanted to share and some I wanted to hoard. Each book gave me exactly what I wanted, something I didn’t know I needed, and made me feel valued as a reader.

I’ve been thinking a lot recently about Connie Willis’s wonderful, painful, somehow unfinished novel Passage. I think now’s the time to reread it

Just wanted to say that Jane Gardam’s glorious triptych—Old Filth, Man in the Wooden Hat, and Last Friends—are among the finest reading experiences I’ve ever had in my entire (now very long) life. I’m so grateful to Europa Editions for keeping them in print
