Question for #ASASKAT folks: who's working on citation practices as part of knowledge production or on knowledge making in academic medicine? I have some really interesting historical data that I don't have the literature background to interpret.

1901 JAMA contributor: the presence of a rabbinical debate about what to do about babies born without foreskin demonstrates that this is a real problem that happens frequently "since theologians do not meet a ritual difficulty until it arises."

WELL.

This morning I'm working on recoding some data regarding historical JAMA authors' citation practices. The 1896 article I just looked at has zero formally indexed citations, and all four of its inline citations are coded as "nonspecific" indicating a formulation such as "every physician knows."

The near-universal insistence of scholars on restating that Francis Galton was a first cousin of Charles Darwin is itself evidence of the survival of eugenic logics. It is DRAMATICALLY more important that they were friends and correspondents who cited each other than that they shared a grandparent.

My advisor mentioned a note-taking strategy involving putting article PDFs into NVivo and coding them as if they were data. I haven't done this and most of my key readings are books for which I do not own a PDF, so I'm trying a hybrid strategy of coding my compiled pull quotes and annotations. 🤷

A lot of my education has been publicly funded so in my view I owe it to the public to share what I'm learning. My notes from ASA are limited by my interests and interpretation, but they're available online for anyone who wants to read them. #ASA2025 #Sociology #PhDStudent

A big reason for everything happening in the US right now is that they spent the last century crushing every semblance of an organized left that has ever existed and it was a very bipartisan effort.

Some federally funded community health centers — which serve rural areas with limited access to medical care — are still unable to access grant funding and are shutting down because of Trump's spending freeze.

We are witnessing an attack on America's most vulnerable people.

It's kind of wild how migrations between social media platforms just kind of reroll influence periodically. I had 20k followers on TikTok and now I'm on Bluesky and I have like 20 followers.

There's an IAT for transphobia now! I apparently have a "moderate" preference for trans people over cis people.

"Virtue signaling" is an alt right term that implies that people do leftist things for clout rather than out of sincere belief. Its use tends to further imply that basically nobody ever does anything moral for genuine reasons. It's an ugly concept and its use here is telling.

I'm officially starting work on my qualifying exams this term, though in reality I started last term. I got about halfway done with my reading before hitting a multifaceted health roadblock that meant I took about six weeks off unscheduled from working on quals. Adjusted schedule looks okay though.

As a scholar of medical racism I cringe hard when people make the "but Arabs are Semites" argument. "Antisemitism" was coined to describe anti-Jewish hatred, while Arabs and Jews "are Semites" according to 19th century race science. It does not benefit us to validate 19th century race science.
