Thief: The Dark Project (1998). This game made light and sound core mechanics, where shadows protect you and sounds can give you away. Plus, the sound design made each room feel tense.

weird thief stuff: originally on OldDark, you dropped your normal sword when you picked up Constantine's Sword (just where you last sheathed it)

also the bulb that powers the force field around Constantine's Sword can be destroyed, which lets it fall to the floor. neat!

this really only feels surprising if you've only ever played on NewDark (like myself); im pretty sure the latter half was the intended solution to getting the sword, and the former is a cool detail. However theres no reason to pick the sword back up and NewMantle lets you get the sword way easier

These days working on my Thief 2 mission is about the only thing that brings me any joy.
