That chair guy.
25 years in arts education, Spurs/Plymouth Argyle supporter. Dad.
Mention of Doctor Who | Blake's 7 | Pebble Mill | Whistle Test and I'll be there.

THREAD 1/8 - These articles are for anyone interested in the BBC and the television landscape of the 1980s.
40 years ago, on 23rd Oct 1984, a revamped and reformatted BBC2 series was transmitted. No longer ‘Old’, no longer ‘Grey’ - this is the story of the final years of Whistle Test.
Happy Doctor Who day everyone!

Hope everyone going to the #blakes7 screening at the BFI has a most excellent time. Flippin’ annoyed that I can’t be there, but fingers crossed for series C.
The two episodes are lite on chairs,
but I’m sure you’ll keep an eye open for the Chadwick sofa in Redemption 😂😂

I graduated with my Masters today, following two years spent studying Philip Hinchcliffe and Graham Williams. A reminder to me that you can mix work and pleasure. #doctorwho

This is very surreal.
It beats the moment some obsessive helped Jon Kay find the BBC Breakfast Time sofa of 1983. 😂

Listening to Miles Davis ‘Sivad’ from 1971 ‘Live/Evil’ tonight, in memory of one of the great drummers, Jack DeJohnette.

Did someone say Strictly Come Dancing were looking for two new hosts?

The Chairs of Doctor Who - new chair day!
In fact, two from 'Dragonfire'. This first one is an
‘Etruscan’ chair, by Danny Lane, designed in 1984.
Also, the elusive French wire chair, circa 1950.

It took me ages, but finally read @cutawaycomics.bsky.social Inferno prequel. I can now perfect the Stahlmann stare. Excellent stuff from Gary Russell, and John Ridgeway, who was ‘My Doctor’ in terms of comic strip, in the 80s. Great world building and poor old Harry Slocum.

I decided to revisit an old post. New material, new things to discover, and new contexts.
This is about a 1982 advert for Maxell tapes, and the confrontational nature of early 1980s commercials. Expect Quatro, Mu-Cron and, yes, the Andrex puppy. pinkforyouractualpterodactyl.com/2022/07/22/m...
Confronting the audience: Maxell tapes advert – ‘Break the Sound Barrier’ (1982)
This is a post about the UK commercial for Maxell tapes – ‘Storm’ (1982), featuring Peter Murphy of Bauhaus.

Obviously, I'm drawn to the Knossos chair, but elsewhere...oh, the riches to be identified! Marvellous post. 👏

This week I achieved my Masters with Distinction. I inflicted pain and suffering on myself while writing the thesis, and now I inflict it on the world. pinkforyouractualpterodactyl.com/2025/09/18/d...

My latest Substack takes a look at my favourite Doctor Who William Hartnell guest starring in 'Softly Softly' who makes a surprising confession. With thanks to Z Cars historian David Brunt.

I thought I'd use some photos I took on a recent trip to Hound Tor to recreate the making of The Sontaran Experiment.
Anything to distract me from the state of the world, the erosion of the BBC, reasoned arguments, you know, that kind of thing.

THREAD - Blake's 7 locations.
01/15 - The riddle of the thatched cottage seen in ‘Pressure Point’.
I’m sure Blake’s 7 fans will recognise this image. I’ve not seen any indication of where Servalan and Travis were holed up for 18 days.
So, I thought I’d have a go.

Youngest daughter woke me up. Wanted to watch The Aristocrats. Bleary eyed, I enjoyed the resemblance to the beginning of Inferno part 1, with both The Doctor and Georges Hautecourt in a yellow car, singing a close approximation of La donna è mobile on arrival.

Masters thesis is submitted! 🍾
(Oh, and the answer to the question was… Yes) 😂

Given it’s a day of Live Aid reminiscing, I thought I’d wheel this post out again. There’s a few nice perspectives from the Whistle Test team responsible for the BBC coverage. (Photos courtesy of director David G. Croft)

Today’s essential screen-based research - recording the ratio of suggestive material to shot duration in successive title sequences of The Holiday Programme between 1960s-2000s.
It’s important work. 😝

Doctor Who hive mind. Can you help?
The Deadly Assassin. The split screen panopticon shot, with the same extras across different levels. Wasn't there a fuss about this - not paying the extras twice, or something? I can't find a reference. Any pointers appreciated.
