Today we pause to reflect on the 48th anniversary of the largest rail disaster in Australia’s history.

18/01/1977, 84 people were killed and 213 injured after a train derailed near Granville station, striking a bridge and causing it to collapse onto two passenger carriages.

2025 celebrates 200 years of the modern #railway on our planet. The 25th Sept date is based on the opening of the Stockton to Darlington railway in England. #NSW opened its first railway in #Sydney (#Redfern to #Granville) 30 years and 1 day later on the 26 Sept 1855. (pic wiki)

A few pics and a diagram showing where runway 22 once intersected the Botany Goods #railway line at #Sydney Airport. The large building the railway would intersect today is the #Qantas hangars at the northern end of the airdrome.

The railway was moved in 1960.

Today's historic pic: Candy liveried EMD diesel locos 42101 and 42219, after bringing the Canberra Monaro Express down from Sydney, only just fit into the headshunt as they run around their train at the absolute end of the line at Canberra station, Kingston, ACT, November 22 1985.

A very unique photo of the #NSW XPT taken from the silo at Shepherds Siding in 1982 as it heads to #Albury from #Sydney (646km). It was introduced in 1982 and based on the British Rail-designed High Speed Train with modifications to suit the Australian climate and geography.

Remember a time when #journo's once undertook cutting edge investigation work for the benefit of the public, like in 1911 when the Evening News (#Sydney #NSW) published a strip about the best way to jump out of a moving #train, the best style was quoted as a 'fine art'! #railway

16/09/1951 & the new #NSW 900 Class DEB set is on trial near #Picton returning from #Mittagong to #Sydney. Designed and built by the #railways locally it took hours off long distance steam services. The original main south via Buxton can be seen in the background. NSW Archives.

On 25/4/1954 a fruit train struck the rear of a goods #train at Bomen (#NSW). The first diesel on the fruit train rolled over after wrecking 3 cars on the goods. In the 12hrs it took to fix the line 9 passengers on the #Sydney Exp missed the connection on the liner Monowai to #NZ.

Most know what a #train control diagram (or graph) is, but did you know it was invented in the mid 1840’s by a little known #French #railway engineer, Charles Ibry.

It was shown to the Minister of Public Works in 1847 and within a decade was used worldwide.

Today its still used after 177 years.

Sir Henry Parkes campaigned the #SouthCoast area in 1888 with connection to the #NSW #railways & a local #pub changed its name to the Wolumla Railway Junction Hotel soon after. 135 years later the line has still not arrived & the closest #station (50km), #Bombala, closed in 1986.

#ANZAC day reminded me of this photo showing troops receiving a meal at the #Junee Railway Refreshment Rooms (RRR) in 1944.

The #railways moved troops & equipment all over #Australia & the RRRs were used to keep the food up to the passing troops.
#NSW

The view has changed a bit.

In 1945 this was Kingsford Smith airport in #Sydney with runway 22 intersecting the Botany Goods railway line.

It should be no surprise to anyone that in In June 1950 a taxing #Ansett DC3 struck an empty coal #train on the crossing in raining and dark conditions.

The railway was moved in 1960.

The #Narrandera to #Tocumwal line (#NSW #Australia) was no stranger to interesting location names, Green Swamp Road being a fantastic example. Opened in 1896 & closed in 1975 it was the first stop on the North side of Berrigan (and the next station south of #Berrigan was called Wait-a-While) #NSW

2 examples of rare #railway infrastructure still standing at #Albury, NSW, Aus. An almost original rural gothic gatehouse (1881) with design origins at the Blue Mts Zig Zag in the 1860’s & Albury Station Box (1885), the last example of a gabled roofed, brick based E2 style signal box in the south.
