Today we remember the 220,000 to 1.5 million Roma and Sinti who lost their lives during the Holocaust. They, like Jewish victims, suffered the most appalling treatment and death at the hands of the Nazis.

Confession - Up until this time I had never read a published survivor testimony. Perhaps I felt that it would bring me too close to the reality (rather than the relative abstraction you can get from more academic/ historic accounts).

Alfred Israelsohn was my great-great-uncle. However, unlike his brother, Alfred did not escape the true horror and tragedy of the Holocaust.

Beginning in the early hours of July 16, French police rounded up thousands of men, women, & children throughout Paris. By the end of the day, the police had taken 2,573 men, 5,165 women, & 3,625 children from their homes. The roundup continued the following day, but with a much fewer arrests.

My great-granddad & his brothers were some of the 250,00 people sent to Buchenwald. They were interned after the November Pogrom in 1938, with my great-granddad being released in January 1939. Today we remember some 56,000 people who did not survive the camp, or see its liberation.
