Mass scale murder action took place in August, when all Jews were rounded up in the Kandava Synagogue, from which they were taken to the Elki Forest (approximately 6 km from Kandava) & shot (approax 68 Jews).

It was on the August 2nd, 1944, that the SS liquidates the “Gypsy family camp” at Auschwitz-Birkenau. The SS transported 1,408 Roma from the family camp & from Auschwitz I to Buchenwald concentration camp. SS men then murder the remaining 2,897 Romani & Sini inmates in the gas chambers at Birkenau.

In the summer of 1944, the Germans murdered thousands of Jews then held in Kaiserwald & its sub-camps; and it may very well be that Alfred was one of those killed during this time.

The killing centre had been completed 80 kilometres (50 mi) from Warsaw only weeks earlier, specifically for the Final Solution. Treblinka was equipped with gas chambers disguised as showers for the "processing" of entire transports of people.

During the Grossaktion, Jews were terrorised in round-ups, marched through the ghetto, & assembled at the Umschlagplatz station square for what was called in the Nazi called "resettlement to the East". From there, they were sent aboard overcrowded trains to the extermination camp in Treblinka.

While there are no recorded attacks on Jews during the departure on land, there were acts of piracy in which Jews died, and others were drowned as a result of being forced to cross the English Channel at a time of year when dangerous storms are common.

Jews were allowed to leave England with cash and personal items but outstanding debts, homes, and other buildings—including synagogues and cemeteries—were forfeit to the king.

The date of issuance was likely chosen as it was a Jewish holy day, the ninth of Ab, which commemorates the destruction of Jerusalem and other disasters the Jewish people have experienced. Edward told the sheriffs of all counties he wanted all Jews out before All Saints' Day (1 November) that year.

At the end of July, the remaining adults were separated from their children and deported to Auschwitz. Over 3,000 children remained interned without their parents until they were deported, among adult strangers, to Auschwitz as well.
