(i might be the only person who holds this view. rambam and zohar condemn saying kedushah without a minyan in any form, modern practice is to say both instances of kedushah i mentioned without a minyan, 'one but not the other' seems to just be me)

hate to put this account on blast but the (elder) rav kook was much much more universalist in perspective than the rambam. the rambam's "universalism" is skin-deep and in his actual halakhic rulings he is usually much narrower and uglier than the kabbalists who yeshayahu leibowitz despises
I was looking for some theoretical / philosophical materials on Selichot סליחות, pre-Kippur prayers for forgiveness.
And I found this in Yeshayahu Leibowitz. The coexistence of deep wisdom about human condition and superficial cruelty about earthly matters in some of the best minds (rav Kook, e.g).

hate to put this account on blast but the (elder) rav kook was much much more universalist in perspective than the rambam. the rambam's "universalism" is skin-deep and in his actual halakhic rulings he is usually much narrower and uglier than the kabbalists who yeshayahu leibowitz despises
like even on narrowly halakhic and not hashkafic questions rav kook (the elder) is much much more liable to side with the ramban over the rambam on this matter (and in fact wrote to that effect, though i dont believe he framed it in those terms)

Córdoba day 2: the archeological museum of Córdoba (free, fascinating, and built on the ruins of a Roman amphitheatre), Casa de Sefarad (pictured: 14yo with a statue of Maimonides, who was born here), and a pair of linked museums about alchemy and medieval Islamic life in the city. I’m beat.

rambam makes a really good point that the reason we reject or at least distrust astrology is because it is antithetical to free will.
i arrived at such a conclusion on my own, it seemed absurd or maybe even wrong to objectify people based on stars. but theologically this tracks too.

IIUC it's solely a restriction on the king, just like the separate prohibitions on excess wives and excess wealth. The example given by Rambam is: the king is prohibited from "having a horse to run in front of him, like other monarchs".
