A thread of what I've read this year.
Have a cold with a fabulous trifecta of symptoms: eyes so ballooned that the pharmacist asked if I could see out of them, sandpaper throat and constant drippy nose. Just as I was embracing winter.

Very much enjoying Wednesday's remarkably wine-adjacent 0% bottles. Both the fizz and the rosé are really quite convincing. Also ready for Dry January to be over.

The thing that really irritates me about Greenland is that, as climate deniers, they are not supposed to believe the ice is melting. So the strategic imperative they're citing should simply not exist in their universe.

Sulawesi just keeps on dishing up very, very old cave art. Hopefully at some point they'll stop dynamiting the karst for cement. www.theguardian.com/science/2026...

Now, I, personally, think he would be *happier* if he just came to terms with the fact the books can’t be finished. Too many factions, too many narrators, and the perspective means you can only move the pieces across the board glacially.

NEW: In January 2024, a man purchased Meta's newly AI-infused smart glasses.

He went on to experience a devastating break with reality that played out across Meta platforms — with Meta AI as his companion, entertaining and affirming his worsening delusional beliefs.

The weird thing about the European mission to Greenland is that it's simultaneously defence against US aggression and spinnable as "As your NATO partners, we are here to help you defend Greenland against Russia and China." Absolutely bizarro. 1/2

Can't speak highly enough of using an independent bookstore rather than a big online giant. Bought a birthday present for my mother to be delivered to her in Australia from Matilda in #Adelaide and left a note asking them not to include a receipt as it was a gift. They wrapped it.

Good analysis here for everyone who thinks Indo's X shutdown is flowers and balloons.
Indonesian govt is terrible on digital rights and it's a sincere threat to democracy. Quick movement on particular issues recently is primarily, I believe, about the ease of making political gags (and defamation) and shutting down CSAM or misogyny is a happy bonus.

Elon Musk and xAI's Grok got suspended by Indonesia because the country not only has -- but will actually enforce -- a regulation that tries to protect people from having their images used in rampant AI generated CSAM / NCII, apparently... www.cnbc.com/2026/01/10/i...
Indonesia temporarily blocks access to Elon Musk's Grok over sexualized images
The move comes after governments and regulators from Europe to Asia have condemned and some have opened inquiries into sexualized content on the app.

My co-working space has a drinks trolley on Friday. It being dry January, this included a nonalcoholic red and a nonalcoholic sparkling white. The red was a bit Ribena-y with a funny nose but the fizz is sufficiently booze-adjacent to make it an alternative to Virgin Marys in a bar.
