Except not one, but 𝙩𝙬𝙀 of Yoko Taro's games suffer from this exact problem, and the spin-offs tend to be better than the actual games.
I don’t know if it only makes sense without the periphery stuff, but Nier has books, stage plays, etc. I once asked Taro about this and how are English fans supposed to keep up and he looked confused and asked β€œWhy would you need to keep up? Who needs all of that?”
After "film trilogy that dropped a critical plot point exclusively via timed Fortnite event" and "video game series whose story only makes sense if you're aware of the events of a canon pachinko machine", I feel like there are whole frontiers of user-hostile narrative design waiting to be explored.

Jack Garland time-traveled thousands and thousands of times to ensure a safer world for Princess Sarah, and you're gonna settle for a dipshit who would "burn the world for you". Okay.

When are people gonna realize that the only thing bullying people for not broadening their horizons does is make them want to do it less
β€œIf you like this, then check this out too” is infinitely better advice than β€œconsume REAL art dipshit”

You can only coast on Devil May Cry's reputation for so long, I guess.

Ultraman Cosmos returned to TBS on July 20, but to compensate for the delay, five episodes were skipped and later released on DVD.

The Blue Planet was released as intended in Augustβ€”and the reshot version with Child Musashi was released in September.

And then, 1 month after the scandal unraveled, Sugiura's accuser took back his claims. On the day of the 2000 incident, Sugiura had been in Tokyo filming a movie, and not in Osaka.

In July 13, 2002, TBS ended reruns of Ultraman Neos with a message from the returning Musashi:

The then-upcoming feature film, Ultraman Cosmos 2: The Blue Planet, was also heavily reshot: the film now starred the child actor who played Musashi as a 10-year-old in the show, whose character saw a vision of his bright future as a hero.

In response to those complaints, Tsuburaya went scorched-earth on Sugiura's image.

The remaining 15 episodes of Ultraman Cosmos were re-edited into a two-part "Special Compilation" with none of Sugiura's scenesβ€”after it aired, TBS ran Ultraman spin-offs in Cosmos's timeslot.

Ultraman Cosmos was a child-friendly series even for Ultraman standards, with a blue Ultraman that preferred to not fight monsters.

Parents were outraged that the pacifist Ultraman their kids had been watching was allegedly a bully. "How do I explain that to my child?!"
November 9, 2025 at 12:35 PM
Musashi's actor, Taiyo Sugiura, had been arrested for an assault and extortion incident in Osaka from two years prior. As a result, Ultraman Cosmos was cancelled with fifteen episodes yet to air.

6:30 PM, June 22, 2002.

Japanese children sat tight, ready to watch the smash hit series Ultraman Cosmos, when they were greeted by this message from the titular superhero himself.

They would see Ultraman, but not his host, Musashi Haruno. 🧡

Gamers complain about soulslikes being the only thing coming out and then the moment a game is designed to be easier or more accessible they'll start bemoaning it being a "frictionless consentroidvania walking sim"

...and that's how "hyperrealism" became a scapegoat for any problems with the modern gaming industry.

Anyway, look at this video. You'll see what I mean.

It's true that compromises or technical limitations sometimes benefit a work of art, but a lot of people warped that to mean "technical limitations are cherished by artists and any attempt to go beyond them is disrepectful to them and their art"...

A lot of hipsters online seem to believe that game designers are infallible, and the final product of a game is exactly as it was intended to be made, with zero compromises or cut corners.

Until someone makes a design decision that said hipsters don't agree with; then it's "selling out".

I feel like people who are so obsessed with emulation don’t grasp the importance of official rereleases

Yes, you can play these games for free unofficially. But official availability is very important in helping series find new fans and giving dead ones a new chance at life

Anyone saying that "there are no Dragon Quest fandom wars" has not seen how heated a Japanese fan can get over Dragon Quest VII's final boss.

If you know, you know.

I'm definitely translating at least *some* of this. This is interesting.

Just curious, is there an e-book version of this? Because I've translated two books already and this one is right up my alley.
