This is how scientific discourse should operate. A respectful + insightful comment by Tomas Uxa on the limits of ML from @jlembrechts.bsky.social's high-impact paper, yet still celebrating it. In return, Jonas applauds Tomas for his detective work. Well done, Tomas and Jonas! A model for us all.
Did we rewrite the laws of physics - or did our ML model predict things that are physically impossible?

Tomas Uxa just published a Commentary on our 'Global maps of soil temp', arguing the latter

I break down the what, the how, and the what next here 👇

A really important & fascinating contribution led by @lysoifer.bsky.social-- the concept of "climate velocities" has been around for 15 years, but for the first time she shows how different velocities are when 1) you consider microclimate and 2) consider 3D structure of vegetation. Check it out!

How to set up your own microclimate network
Back in 2021, we had an important thought: maybe we should start treating microclimate the same way we treat macroclimate. Weather and climate are monitored by national governments through organize…

The word is out officially, now: SoilTemp has finished its transformation into 'The MEB-network' - a fully-fledged research network that goes far beyond just being a database. And boy, does that make me proud!

Getting informal reports that as part of the mass layoffs at the Department of Education, the International and Foreign Language Education (IFLE) Office has been "abolished."

IFLE administers Title VI and Fulbright-Hays grant and fellowship programs.

A disaster.

Of course many federal workers can just “find another job”. But the point is that the jobs we do are done for the *public good*. There are no private sector corollaries. We do things that are largely not profitable and that is on purpose. We do work that benefits everyone, if sometimes indirectly.
