In 2007, the Malawi High Court ruled that the mandatory imposition of a death sentence for murder was unconstitutional. Read reflections from our Co-Executive Director Saul Lehrfreund on the strategic features of the case and it's wider contribution to the global movement towards abolition 👇
⚖️Until 2007, every person convicted of murder in Malawi was automatically sentenced to death.

The Kafantayeni case changed that, leading to hundreds of resentencings and inspiring reforms in Kenya and Malaysia.
