Ukrainian survivors are urging States to sign it and to adopt an inclusive, victim-centred approach to reparations that include victims before the 2022 full-scale invasion.

Iryna has spent years fighting for justice for other survivors of conflict-related sexual violence like herself.

But a new Convention establishing an International Claims Commission for Russian aggression against Ukraine excludes victims such as herself, who suffered these crimes before 2022. 🧵

The UK must use every diplomatic tool to bring Jagtar home, appoint the long-promised Special Envoy for complex arbitrary detention cases, and introduce a legal right to consular assistance to give clarity regarding the protection available to British citizens facing human rights violations abroad.

Gurpreet's brother, Jagtar Singh Johal, was violently arrested in India 8 years ago and has been arbitrarily detained in India ever since - despite a court acquitting him in one of the nine cases against him.

No family should have to fight this long.

For those who have already waited more than a decade for justice, this exclusion is not technical. It is a denial of recognition and dignity.

We recently met a group of Ukrainian survivors to discuss the urgent need for comprehensive and inclusive reparation, within the Claims Commission & beyond.

We welcome the release of 100+ prisoners in Belarus, incl. Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ales Bialiatski, following talks involving US sanctions relief.

A vital humanitarian step, but repression continues. Justice and accountability must not be sacrificed. All political prisoners must be freed.

This #ASP24 side event seeks to highlight a vital truth: Survivors are not passive participants in justice processes.

They are human rights defenders, community leaders, and drivers of change reshaping how we understand justice, reparations, participation, and agency.
