📢 Protests are fundamental to democratic life. Yet across the world, peaceful gatherings are increasingly met with excessive force and dangerous weapons, which undermines freedom of expression, violates human rights and in some cases may amount to torture and other ill-treatment.

Grenades filled with rubber pellets and other so-called ‘less lethal’ munitions have been increasingly deployed, despite being linked to serious injuries and even deaths

There is no clear danger being caused by the protesters, other weapons have already been used to disperse the crowd, & the officer throwing the grenade underarm releases it from his hand in the air. This type of use is dangerous at such short range.

🇦🇺 Reports in @theguardian.com, @australia.theguardian.com suggest extremely dangerous use of a ‘stinger’ grenade at protests in Melbourne earlier this year. Explosive grenades are dangerous & are not suitable for crowd control.

‼️ The use shown in video seen by Omega is very concerning:

We call on States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention (including Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office) to work with the OPCW to investigate the claims made.
December 1, 2025 at 12:14 PM
The chemical reportedly used, camite/bromobenyzyl cyanide, is not listed on the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW)’s list of acceptable chemicals for use in domestic law enforcement. Any alleged use would amount to a breach of the Chemical Weapons Convention.
