I can’t describe the joy I get from sharing silent comedies with an audience. The shorts were between 104-111 years old and yet a big crowd of people came out to see them. And they laughed! They watched Florence Turner make funny faces and laughed a lot!

In One A.M. Chaplin frames his whole body to show his performance but keeps the frame close enough that you rarely see beyond his moment to moment awareness, locking you into his little box of drunken subjectivity to be confounded by the trappings of his wealth. Brilliant movie.

What's your favorite use of pre-existing classical music in a movie not directed by Stanley Kubrick?
Mine is probably "Hall of the Mountain King" from Fritz Lang's M, the main melody of which is whistled by the killer.

Rest in peace Daniel Naroditsky. So young, so talented. His ability to share his knowledge and passion of chess made the game and the world better. I learned a lot from him, as did everyone who encountered his work. An unbelievable loss.

A director just spammed me a screener claiming he is “huge fan” of my letterboxd. Buddy, I respect the hustle, but no one is a huge fan of seeing the occasional two-reeler I remember to log without comment.

I have a powerful affinity for mallards. They bring me peace like almost nothing else. I like to give them oats and listen to them laugh at each other.

The use of empty space will soon prove to be a practical one, established for a flurry of incoming gags, but for a moment at the start of The Vagabond it seems like Chaplin is just getting weird with it. One of the nicer frames in his Mutual catalogue.

I have honestly not stopped thinking about this all day
![But I do have what's called mild cognitive impairment, which gets in the way and its effect is on the memory, of just being able not to remember lines. Even though I would prepare and know the lines and know them cold, actually getting in and getting all the ducks lined up was difficult to do. And I expressed that to the casting director, Cassandra, and she said, "Well, let me talk to Paul and I'll get back to you."
And we did a little audition. It was for another
part in the film, and I just had trouble even doing that without some help with the lines. So I was surprised when she came back to me and said,
"We'd love to have you still, but there's another role that we have in mind." And with that, I was
cast and came on the set for [a five-day] shoot.
And working with all these wonderful actors in the scene and with Paul that day, the first day, again, I couldn't remember my lines. Out of the few that l had, it would often be one word out l couldn't grab.
