Is social media dying? How much has Twitter changed as it became X? Which party now dominates the conversation?

Using nationally representative ANES data from 2020 & 2024, I map how the U.S. social media landscape has transformed.

Here are the key take-aways 🧵

A widely held view is that the Gini coefficient is not decomposable by subgroups. This paper proposes an axiomatic framework that ensures well-behaved within and between-group terms under which the Gini is decomposable with a novel and unique formula. buff.ly/XdnzG6F

Indeed! Thanks to the Swedish Research Council for Health, Working Life and Welfare, Forte 🙏🏻 w/
@pengzell.bsky.social
Thank you Forte for supporting our project (with @thaning.bsky.social and Emma von Essen) on between-employer pay disparities in Sweden: 5 m SEK that lets us keep doing the work we care about.

Grateful, and mindful of how many great ideas go unfunded in today’s climate.

Always wanted to do a KBO decomposition with more than 2 groups? @thaning.bsky.social and I present a multi-group generalization that overcomes this limitation, while providing a number of methodological advantages:

Just because an LLM can produce a report with various figures & charts doesn't mean it is good at statistics.

Because good statistics is not about producing code.

It's about deep knowledge of study design & conduct. In my opinion, 95% of all data science problems come from poor questions & design.
Y'all. I just got ChatGPT to do everything in R for this manuscript. I mean EVERYTHING. And it's all legit and reproducible. I'm shook.

How are we mentoring our trainees in statistics now? Who needs to learn coding in R line by line, and who doesn't?

You cannot be truly creative if it is not safe to fail.

Yet modern academic science requires constant short term success.

To survive, you must win grants & 'deliver' on those grants by publishing lots of papers.

That leads to a culture of low risk, iterative research oversold as 'groundbreaking.
Some say you either have "it" or you don't, and that creativity cannot be learned, but that really misses the point. Creativity is lost in the wrong environment. We need to recognize the "night science" aspect of our work and that we need to nurture it in our training. www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Can creativity in science be learnt? These researchers think so
Time pressure gets in the way of ideas. Developing ‘creative oases’ and small grants for risky ideas can encourage innovative thinking in science.
