Of the 6 Irish-based ERC consolidator awards, only 1 in STEM. This pattern repeats in previous rounds and calls. Short-sighted government science policy has been a disaster over 13 years has deeply eroded capacity to be competitive at the highest level.

I think Covid made a huge difference, universities did a lot of taking and (in my direct experience anyway) absolutely no giving, making clear the nature of the social contract between institutions and their staff, and we cannot go back and unknow that.
