Also, trading Tatis and Merrill are inevitable imo, given the payroll commitments. It will happen once attendance recedes a bit and they’re not competitive anymore, and a true rebuild is necessary. 2028ish.
2021-2025, 5 years is a pretty big window and it just didn’t succeed for a variety of reasons. Some are Preller’s fault, some Seidler’s and some bad luck. Soon we’ll enter a period similar to 1999-2002, watching a 75 win team and Tony Gwynn chasing 3K hits. And by 2032 hopefully things turn.

See, we still have elections. It’s gonna be ok.

Two cost controlled SP sounds nice, but having the backup catcher spot nailed down seems a little more important.

"Only Preller can fix this huge steaming pile of shit payroll situation he himself created.”
November 4, 2025 at 9:04 PM
“Gotta keep Preller, he’s a good GM.”
November 4, 2025 at 8:27 PM
I read a lot of people like Mike: politically progressive, can identify the consequences of systemic inequalities, and yet when it comes to MLB they fall back on mysticism as analysis. Like the late 90s Yanks, the Dodgers lap the field in revenue and payroll; this is why they win. Not complicated.
Dodgers have entered the Dracula Zone. It does not matter how bad they are playing, how slumpy their hitters are, how many of them are injured. You have to drive a stake through their hearts and watch them turn to dust, or else they will rise up and kill you. Last true Dracula team was '96-01 Yanks.

And yet Joe will tell you it’s perfectly great there’s such competitive inequality in MLB. And everyone can spend like the Dodgers can spend, they just gotta want it.
Kyle Tucker is watching the Dodgers this week and pricing private islands.

Padres golden era: 1 NLCS appearance, lost 1-4. While Dodgers make 5 World Series, win 3. Some people really have Stockholm syndrome with Preller.
November 2, 2025 at 3:00 PM
Dodgers keep winning titles so apparently we need to extend Preller.
November 2, 2025 at 5:12 AM
Just remember: it’s perfectly good that the Dodgers have an enormous competitive advantage every year. And suggesting that it’s in the best interest of the game to make MLB slightly more equitable is insane. It makes you a sniveling billionaire apologist, or something.
October 18, 2025 at 3:41 AM
Sorry, but I can’t consider this the golden age of Padres baseball when it’s the golden age of Dodgers baseball.
October 18, 2025 at 3:24 AM
Also, the window is closing soon, and it won’t be pretty 2028-2032. Might as well extend Preller and go out with a bang. Changing GMs at this point will achieve very little.

Why I’d like them to promote Niebla: 1) continuity; 2) don’t risk losing him; 3) create an org culture of a pitching development machine like Cleveland - with a declining core, their identity should be Tatis, Merrill and a collection of misfit pitching toys.
October 17, 2025 at 3:09 PM
They let Preller address the media without an extension. No home playoff games = lame duck season. Hiring Niebla keeps it clean. If they miss the playoffs next year just clean house
October 14, 2025 at 5:24 PM
Dodgers winning back to back titles gonna be annoying.
October 7, 2025 at 12:01 AM
That season could have been an email.
October 3, 2025 at 4:44 AM
The golden age of Padres baseball produced a single NLCS appearance loss 1-4. I’m not calling for Preller to be fired but I understand why they’d feel it’s time to part ways.

Darvish is done, king is injured and we don’t hit homers. We maxed out.
October 2, 2025 at 9:46 PM
People can keep blaming Shildt, but he’s a middle manager. If the org is suffering from systemically poor decision making, the fault should lie with the head of baseball operations.
September 30, 2025 at 10:45 PM
Starting Yu Darvish in Wrigley would be a big mistake. People still believe in Darvish, but ifs not really him… it’s a 39 year old with a bum elbow and 5.5 ERA.
September 27, 2025 at 2:22 AM
Darvish has given up a HR in 9 consecutive starts.
September 27, 2025 at 1:45 AM
If Padres can’t win Pivetta starts at home vs playoff teams, I can’t envision any path for October that extends beyond two games.
September 23, 2025 at 2:14 AM
The White Sox rank 22nd in HR. The Padres rank 29th.
September 20, 2025 at 12:12 AM
Sure, the Padres have the lowest ranked farm system in Baseball America. But 86 win and Wild Card participant flags fly forever.
