Hi, I’m Andrew and I am a fisheries scientist and Assistant Professor of Biology at the U of North Georgia. I am interested in freshwater fish conservation, riverscapes, popgen, and I am a leading expert in black bass conservation. Follow along for #FishSci and #BlackBassDiversity content!
I don’t quite yet have the same reach on here as I did on Twitter, so I’m going to start a new fish game called #EtymologyEpithet, where I explain the etymology (the meaning behind a name) for all of the fishes I’ve described, starting with Cirrhilabrus isosceles, the Pintail Fairywrasse.

Forgive me for any really old posts that may show up in feeds...porting over my twitter content (finally).

On the board for 2025 (finally!) with an Alabama Bass from the river

Please just bring me some warmer days for spring break. PLEASE. I need some time on a stream for my sanity.

Remember to take time away from social media and take care of yourselves!

Assistant Professor (TT) in Computational Biology at U of North Georgia. Broadly defined, biostatistics and bioinformatics included. Come work with me in a wonderful department!

Rolling reviews start March 21st until filled.

Please share widely!

I could use some new music recs…bonus if suggestions channel 60’s/70’s protest era vibes. No reason 🫠

Public access to rivers is very unclear in Georgia…we need a much more unified push to make this right.

I was always hoping there was a way to find the salmonid scientists on here easily. Now there is! Please comment to be added, it is (very) incomplete 🙏

At the southern terminus of the Appalachian Mountains flows streams rich in aquatic biodiversity. The Shoal Bass, Micropterus cataractae, is one such treasure.

A somber announcement - today the US Fish and Wildlife Services is proposing to list the monarch butterfly as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. It may become the 100th insect to be listed. Populations of millions of monarchs have declined 80-95% recently. #虫

I was taught in grad school that scientists should have 3 versions of talks about their work ready: a 30 second “elevator pitch,” a 12 minute conference length talk, and a 40 minute seminar length talk.

I think we should also have a short version aimed at non-scientists.

While the smallmouth and largemouth bass are probably the most well-known of the black basses, there are several other cool species like the Suwannee and Guadalupe bass. And we're learning new things about black bass diversity all the time (see: news.yale.edu/2022/06/06/r...) #25DaysofFishmas

The hadal zone (6,000–11,000 m) is the deepest part of the ocean. Some creatures like the deep-sea snailfish live here, surviving crushing pressures.

Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass…and 17 other species of black bass?! 🤯

Yup! And almost all of them are of conservation concern within their native streams of the southeastern USA. #BlackBassDiversity #Fishsci
