Can defence innovation succeed without putting people first?

In this #DefenceinDepth article ‪@tarazammit.bsky.social‬ questions whether the UK’s newly released #StrategicDefenceReview side-lines personnel and culture in favour of tech-driven priorities.

📝 The #StrategicDefenceReview: Innovation Without the People?

With AFCAS figures showing that only 42% of Service personnel “are satisfied with their Service life in general," things have to change. My #SDR analysis in #DefenceinDepth:

📣 Watching #Defence Secretary John Healey's Commons statement on the #SDR and am intrigued by the announcement to increase to 76,000 Full-time Regulars in the #BritishArmy - interested to see what will be done to get there and how current personnel will be better supported in the process

Huge thanks to the Women's Inclusive Network DE&S for inviting me to speak as part of their #IWD programme! 👏

My talk 'Making Defence Work for Women' focused on topics like the importance of exploring policy versus practice & empathy as a moral & operational imperative 📣

Perhaps, but you still have to crew a navy for the next 20 to 30 years, a period in which a lot can happen. And then the human burden doesn't necessarily disappear after you build a fleet of autonomous ships.

"Admiral Sir Ben Key, the head of the navy, is understood not to have asked for more sailors in his submission to the review, believing that in 20 to 30 years destroyers and frigates will be autonomous." www.thetimes.com/uk/defence/a...
Military numbers unlikely to increase after defence review
Budgetary and recruitment constraints will affect the size of the armed forces but a ‘homeland defence force’ could result in greater co-operation with emergency services

Note to self: do not, I repeat, do NOT read newspaper comment sections late on a Friday afternoon.

Instead, remind oneself about events featuring important research on women in defence 👇
