My portrait bootcamp is for you if you:
- Spend too much time thinking about drawing rather than actually drawing
- Don't know what to focus on in your studies
- Get overwhelmed by all there is to learn
- Struggle to balance art with other responsibilities
- Thrive with accountability & structure

Even if you’re short on time, squeeze in a quick 15 minute practice study.

Your brain will try to convince you otherwise, but it DOES make a difference.

I've been using my Karst planner to log my art discoveries rather than plan my days.

It feels more in alignment with the slow pace of my day - rather than focus on hustling, I tell stories and log creative moments.

So of course I'm giving one (and some prints) away!! 👇️

Every time I create now, I try to conjure up @adwills.bsky.social and @sylessae.bsky.social's posts in my brain as encouragement

Art is deeply personal!! Do what's true to you!! Your voice is important and valid!! Add some swords and elves!!

I dare you to fill the next ten pages of your sketchbook with ink drawings.

At the end of it, tell me what you learned.

I drew Astarion for week 2 of #sylbootcamp. He is expressing my feelings about one of my fellow boot campers entrapping me into drawing a hand.

It was challenging to work from a game screenshot, and the result feels kind of stiff. I’m going back to my nice familiar stock photos.

Keep drawing. Keep drawing things you like.

You'll become recognizable through your taste and discernment.

That's it.

Style is a compilation of things you like.

The need for practice drawings to look "good" is what keeps most artists from practicing at all.

Experiment. Try different approaches. Embrace the bad. It's supposed to be messy and unknown.

That's what practice is.

Don't make a big deal out of drawing.

Look at stuff you like. Draw that stuff. Practice whats hard by drawing it a lot.

Rinse and repeat.

If you're feeling a bit aimless when creating, it helps to have something bigger to work towards. An example is my convention prep:

- It creates a clear goal
- Every project has a purpose
- Everything is an experiment (yay dopamine)
- The monotony of packing and printing is a brain reset from art

This has come up a lot in recent mentor sessions and feels important to reiterate:

It's important to know the difference between pushing past your comfort zone versus ignoring your own needs for rest and regulation. 👇

Playing with other mediums can feel like becoming a master of none, but I've found each one feeds the next. What I learn in one medium always carries into others and has a funny way of leading me back to the one I love most.

Self doubt is something every artist deals with.

Instead of trying to erase the doubt, invite it in. Let it sit with you while you create.

When you show up WITH doubt, you build confidence.

It took you hours, days, months to make.

✨ Why should your art only live for a few hours in a single post?

Here is permission to repost your work.

My grievance with the notion of talent is how much it disempowers individuals and how deterministic it is — how it causes most to believe that there is an age limit to learning and developing skills, and most importantly, that it’s not as worthy of trying as a result
