Padraig o’Tuama could recite the phonebook and it would be worth listening. O’Tuama reading poetry is sublime.

Last night we saw Pádraig Ó Tuama speak at Duke Chapel and it really drove home for me the stark difference between what passes for consensus-making in US culture ('spirited debate,' 'market of ideas') and the real work of peace: getting in a room, listening, and being surprised by each other.

The other really good poetry close reading podcast I need to catch up on is Poetry Unbound by Pádraig Ó Tuama. Kamran and Pádraig have the top 2 podcasts now for close reading poems after Poetry Foundation threw the baby out with the bathwater trying to be inclusive to a wider variety of voices.
Poetry Unbound | The On Being Project
Your new ritual, in podcast form: Immerse yourself in a single poem, guided by Pádraig Ó Tuama.

“When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out!’ The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, ‘Unbind him, and let him go.’” – John 11:43–44 (NRSVue)

Colbert gone. Kimmel silenced. Not for lying, but for speaking the truth trump doesn't want you to hear.

Mocking the regime is now a punishable offense. All to keep critics quiet. Laugh too loud, think too clearly & you vanish. This is how authoritarianism sterilizes a culture & numbs dissent.

Elul isn’t just about “going deep".

Some of us live there every day - our whole existence feels like one long Elul.

Teshuvah isn’t about fixing yourself.

It’s about returning to yourself.

Yesterday, Adam from South Dakota called my SiriusXM show to say Charlie Kirk was unalived b/c people on the left use words like racism or facism to describe folks like Charlie.

That call did not end the way he thought it would.

if we can’t get MAHA to agree that it’s wrong to kill public health workers if they don’t have control over policy, i’m not sure what common ground we can develop because that is categorically the same ideology as fascism, which you can’t work with. i’m glad folks are trying (we need them to) but

Let's go, Team Human!! We can do this!!
If you are able to get a flu and covid vaccine, PLEASE do (& wear an N95 or better when you do, if able!)

I am an immunocompromised person who cannot access the vaccine— trust me I’m tryin’— so I am DEEPLY relying on folks who say they care about me to truly care about me by vaccinating & masking.

White people are fumbling their way through this moment because it’s really hard for them to accept that this is always what this country was about.

And they’re mad at Black people for still finding joy because “THE COUNTRY IS BURNING HOW ARE YOU WATCHING FOOTBALL.”

Interesting dynamic.
