Former academic. Author of Liberty and Insanity in the Age of the American Revolution. Happy to be back in a city.
😂 Had to attend a citations meeting for an online class. Signaled hard that, having been an academic forever, I was familiar with citations.

Tried not to become testy with the nice woman doing her job.

Scholarship on early American Jewish History? Give me your titles. Asking for a student. I'm out of my depth here.

For all its broken parts, the genius of the US public school system, is that it brings together kids from incredibly different backgrounds. In my classroom, we have a kid whose family is living in a shelter and a kid whose godmother is a Supreme Court justice.

Being observed teaching in kindergarten vs. being observed teaching in university:

The university students always had my back. The kindergartners are sowers of chaos and do not have my back (but I love them).

The largest cockroach I’ve ever seen in our kindergarten classroom today but, hey, let’s spend more money on ICE.

I don't know if I'll be any good at it, but I really want to move from instructional aide to elementary school teacher next year. I'm learning so much as an aide and just had the privilege of sitting in on/contributing to parent-teacher conferences.

The kids are all right as are the parents.

In my former profession (Professor of History), I had a handful of colleagues who had taught in K-12. It doesn't seem to happen the other way around. I can't be the only person who acted on the I-want-to-teach-them-earlier impulse???

Thinking about all the money spent to militarize DC as the ceiling falls in our kindergarten classroom’s bathroom. (Acoustic tiles and water. No one was hurt.)

I work in an elementary school but am not eligible for a COVID vaccination.

Standing in a bathroom with a teacher and 21 kindergartners during a lockdown drill is heartbreaking. My job is to keep it together for them, but I looked at their sweet small faces and it was all I could do not to sob.

I just checked out Damaris Phillips’s vegetarian cookbook from @dcpubliclibrary.bsky.social. It looks great but I can also guarantee you she’s not making beet and feta burgers while wearing this white blouse!

This afternoon, I lead kindergartners through a lockdown drill. We are so broken.

4 or 5 National Guardsman (they were all men) at the Navy Yard Metro at 6:00 pm as Washington Spirit fans headed home after the match. I asked why they carried weapons against a civilian population and they said it was to protect themselves.
