Rather wrinkled lefty from Ōtepoti/Dunedin.
Hey hey - look how the Wikipedia page for NZF begins! What that "A" word doing there - surely it's not allowed..?🤔

Shane Jones entered parliament following a career as a Māori Studies lecturer, in the Māori secretariat for the Environment Ministry & Dept of PM & Cabinet, advising on Treaty Settlements & then as a member of the Waitangi Fisheries Commission. Now he’s complaining about people saying ‘Aotearoa’.

Richard Harmon (a very experienced political reporter who runs the Politik newsletter) has focused on Seymour in his last few lead articles. Yesterday he was commenting on the obvious tension between Luxon & Seymour, & why Luxon has to hold back in public. Today he's asking if the govt can survive.

One News started with the sudden resignation of the Chief Exec of Te Whatu Ora/Health NZ. There's clearly friction with Levy & w the govt's 'cut it to the bone' approach. Very depressing, even before they moved onto the story about homeless people camping on the streets, but not on the housing list.

I hope we've all seen this. 😀

Of course, there's a lot of water to flow under the bridge, yet, but it's still an encouraging sign, this early in Luxon's term. www.stuff.co.nz/nz-news/3605...
New poll shows centre-left with enough support to govern
The Talbot Mills corporate poll has Labour’s support at 34%, overtaking National on 33%, with Chris Hipkins taking out the top spot as preferred PM.

If you missed this morning's RNZ discussion with 4 economists (2 from the right, 2 from the left), it's worth reading this. None of them is impressed by this government's management of the economy, so far, and nor by Luxon's back-to-the-future announcements this week. www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...
Economists challenge details of Luxon's new growth plan
The PM's scene-setting speech this year has focused on growth, but four economists' say his plans are mixed at best.

My daughter's heart surgery might have cost $5,000 *USD* if we'd gone to India to get it done privately. $8,700 NZD. "Oh, but you could share some of *your* $6,000 with her, Stephanie" says David. Except that was the same year I gave birth to her. Probably wouldn't be much left in the kitty, David

Why does Bryce Edwards' column in today's Herald, supposedly about the impact of lobbyists and influencers on National, actually skate right over that (just accepting it as a good thing - apparently Damien Grant is pleased, so that's fine) and spend most of the time attacking Labour..?🤔

People interested in the parliamentary process may want to check out today's Politik newsletter. (You can read one a month for free.) It explores the new Scrutiny Committee system set up by the last parliament to increase meaningful scrutiny of govt and ministries. www.politik.co.nz/keeping-the-...

A wee whinge about an ad that's been annoying me for a while.

"Countdown is changing to Woolworths. And you're going to see *changes* for the better! The first of which is low price. The *same* low prices continue..."

So, the "change" is... what, exactly? It's nonsensical!

Well, we can't claim the latest One poll is good for the left. The only things to celebrate are the slight waning in support for National and (phew!) ACT. The less sway that bunch of awful loons has over things the better.

Just back from a bracing walk with my mate Jethro (pictured, left). Gotta say the hail dump caught me by surprise! Now, unsatisfied after an hour or so wandering around the hills of Dunedin, he's zooming around the room, jumping on & off any close-by bit of furniture. Good thing I love the wee sod!

"Worst finance minister in history!"? Luxon's hyperbolic rhetoric reaches ridiculous heights. Wild statements, wild claims, hot-mess budgets policies - National has a huge credibility problem.

I've just heard Winston Peters intoning the line about being "for the many, not the few". Well, his new policy for time limited benefits sure gives new meaning to that! I guess we now know who he regards as "the few"...
