“I think the process of illustrating picture books is looking for the space in between the words, and then building out from these spaces. So you’re searching for the parts of the story that have been left unsaid.”

I just found out that there are people who think that "nonplussed" means unbothered or unfazed, and I'm just... 🤯🤯🤯 That's almost the literal opposite of what it means! Nonplussed means to be perplexed, confused, not sure how to react.
Nonplussed is the mildest of the feelings I have about this!

It's Marvelous Middle Grade Monday and I have THE LOST YEAR by Katherine Marsh. Set in two time periods and in multiple points of view this story is inspired by the author's own family history.

I didn't really have allergies or food intolerances until they cropped up in the last five years. Want me to lose my voice? Just give me a package of these.

My grandparents’ typewriter. I wonder what kind C.S. Lewis used 20 years later to type the first Narnia manuscript…

I, a person with no NEED for alt-text, have clicked on so many images lately and have been disappointed to find none. Aside from description, alt-text can add context, or humor. Sometimes it's utilitarian, and sometimes it's charming! You're missing out if you're not providing or reading it!

Good point.
Many #writers get stuck because they mentally treat their #roughdraft like a more finished draft. Let go of that. It’s called a ROUGH draft for a reason. Give yourself permission to write poorly, explore the story, go down rabbit holes. There will be time to perfect the story later.
