Yet the Representation of the People Bill won’t even touch our voting system, which leaves millions unrepresented.

‘Representation of the People Bill’ without proportional representation is a joke. And not a funny one 😤

We need the National Commission on electoral reform included in the bill.

It’s time to send a clear message to the government: our dysfunctional electoral system is holding our country back."

It’s not just business that suffers when there is no room for consensus politics: all sectors of society are affected. Short-termism is built into our absurd electoral system. We need PR now, before we find ourselves with another government intent upon ‘change’ without proper deliberation.

The letter below published in today’s Financial Times, makes a persuasive case for coalition government. The only way to achieve this is proportional representation. We need to take action now to achieve PR before the next election.

Labour and the Tories are banking on a return to the ‘old normal’. That’s not what voters want | Rafael Behr
An economic recovery could still change the parties’ fortunes. But the days when only two parties were licensed to supply Britain with prime ministers are gone, says Guardian columnist Rafael Behr

The ailment has been correctly diagnosed but the cure - a reformed electoral system giving us PR - is not mentioned in this letter. We need Proportional Representation in place BEFORE the next election, or our economy will remain in the doldrums for another generation to suffer under.

"Is it not time that we had a proper consideration in this House of changes to the voting system, so that the next election is not a disaster for democracy?"

An authoritative voice with a compelling message: we need a better form of politics based on a better voting system. The current nonsenses at No 10 are a perfect example of mess made by a government with a huge majority in the HoC and a tiny support base in the country.
