and now hospice wants to meet with the entire family.

I think Americans are realizing that democracy is a participation sport, and the the government is ours if we want it to be. I feel like we got complacent and hoped some other third party would do the work for us. Seems like we have to learn that lesson every generation.

The whole thing was confidently directed by Matt Ross (great actor, I had no idea he directs), and he did a marvelous job bringing the screenplay to life, adapted by Mike Makowsky.

The series feels like a cross between tomato soup on a snow day and a horror flick. Fantastic combo, it turns out.

And Mr. Bradley Whitford, playing Secretary of State James Blaine, is charming as ever. It's pretty remarkable to me that @bradleywhitford.bsky.social's hallmark mannerisms translate so well to every role he has. The exasperation, the casual incredulity, the easy "fuck off" energy... so good.

Shea Whigham, playing Senator Roscoe Conkling, the boss of the New York Republican political machine, with such compelling obnoxiousness that one hopes he will be punched at some point during the series. Always the sign of a great performance.

I'm now convinced that Nick Offerman was born to play Chester A. Arthur, and we deserve an Arthur biopic starring Mr. Offerman now-ish. At turns hilarious and calculating and ridiculous, he's the warm blood of the flick.

Betty Gilpin, always a compelling actor, is brilliant as First Lady Lucretia Garfield. She really deserves her own major vehicles, preferably with more scenes of her slapping the shit out of clownish men.

Michael Shannon, playing President Garfield, has channeled his usual intensity into a glowing, restrained gravitas here. He is so good in this performance that it'll likely catalyze a resurgence of interest in Garfield's career.

Matthew Macfadyen is deliciously unsettling as Charles Guiteau. He plays him as a sociopath with a heart of gold (the 10k variety, to be clear). He is shameless, he is funny, he is scary, and I both wanted to hug him and also not be alone with him in a dark alley. Or really anywhere. So... no hugs.

The casting is so good for this that it made me look up the casting directors: Jeanne McCarthy and Nicole Abellera Hallman.

Take a bow, ladies. My goodness, what an exceptional job finding the right actors for these roles.

Top of my mind: superb casting.

I cannot recommend this enough. Excellent in every aspect. And really brings home how bad Garfield’s medical care was, due to one doctor’s pride and refusal to take sanitary precautions.

How a family secret led Greg Bovino to lead Trump's border crackdown
Before he became the face of Trump's tough ICE policies, Border Patrol commander Greg Bovino endured a childhood marked by a family scandal that changed the trajectory of his life.
