My alternative home for over 16 years, @globalvoices.org, is running a donation drive in the face of a difficult funding environment. You all know why: the obliteration of foreign aid. They need your help. GV is a precious resource in today's media ecosystem: community powered, local expression.
🗣️Today we're launching a campaign to raise $250,000 to keep Global Voices alive and thriving.

👉🏿We’re ad-free, paywall-free, and community-powered — but funding cuts and a tough media landscape are putting us at risk.

Support Global Voices as we launch our donation campaign
Sharp cuts to foreign aid by a number of governments are shrinking the available funds for nonprofits, with digital rights organizations like ours taking a particular hit.

We don't want to lose the art and practice of translation because no one is willing to pay for it. We want to keep offering our articles in as many languages as we can, and we want to be able to give our translators more -trainings, stipends, support. Help us do that: globalvoices.org/donate/

A powerful edition of the @globalvoices.org "Where Are You REALLY From?" podcast. Daria Dergacheva talks with @akwe.bsky.social about struggles with national identity: "for a while, it was just impossible to say you were from Russia [...] I was scared, and I was ashamed, and I didn't want to do it."
Podcast: Daria on carrying a Russian identity and setting her children free of it
“Since the invasion started, I decided I don't want my kids to have a Russian identity.”

They're called public records for a reason. Starting today, WIRED will *stop paywalling* articles that are primarily based on public records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, becoming the first publication to partner with @freedom.press to offer this for our new coverage.
Wired is dropping paywalls for FOIA-based reporting. Others should follow
As the administration does its best to hide public records from the public, Wired magazine is stepping up to help stem the secrecy
