World Wetlands Day (February 2) always involves several government agencies producing public education messages and activities. Hurricane Melissa inflicted huge damage on our mangroves - and on coastal communities - 3 months ago. Where do we go from here? Restoration, yes. Protection, definitely.
World Wetlands Day: Jamaica’s mangrove forests under pressure
Today is World Wetlands Day. This is a fairly major event in Jamaica, with government agencies pulling out all the stops to get some activities going, and to raise awareness of the importance of our wetlands via the media. The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) normally takes the lead; this year, it hasproduced a video(but do I hear the cry of Loons in the audio?

Today, February 2, is World Wetlands Day, the anniversary of the Ramsar Convention of 1971.

In the U.S., this day comes at a time when many of the legal tools that once mirrored Ramsar’s ecological understanding—the Clean Water Act of 1972 and Endangered Species Act of 1973—are being narrowed.

Today is #WorldWetlandsDay! 💧

Wetlands are some of the most important ecosystems on our planet, providing habitats for wildlife, protecting us from floods, and helping filter future drinking water.

We're grateful for the hard work #Indigenous stewards do to protect our wetlands. 🌎

As we mark World Wetlands Day, I’m thinking about how critical wetlands are to our communities here in New Mexico. These ecosystems protect our water, support wildlife, and help us adapt to a changing climate. We must continue working to protect them for generations to come!

This World Wetlands Day, we’re celebrating the incredible benefits wetlands bring. From improving water quality and reducing flood risk, to supporting wildlife and strengthening resilience across entire catchments.
